The efficacy of artificial dermis combined with continuous vacuum sealing drainage in deep neck multiple spaces infection treatment

Deep neck multiplespacesabscessed formwhen two or more head and neck fasciaspacesareinfected. Therapid development oftheinfections can causeseriouscomplications. Someinfections may belife-threatening, such as thosethatcauseairway obstruction, jugular vein thrombosis, descendingmediastinitis, sepsis,acuterespiratory distress syndrome,and disseminated intravascularcoagulation. Deep neck abscessesare dangerous. [1–3] Theearly application ofantibioticscan control or partially cure neck infections. [4–6] Therefore, there has been a declinein the incidence ofthis type of diseasein recent years. Surgicalincision combined with debridementand drainage has been the preferred treatment for neck multiplespaces infections thatare difficult to controlwith antibiotics. [7] However,clinicians mustaddress persistent problems, such as burdensome dressing changes, long-termand massantibiotic use, prolonged infection and long-time hospitalstays. Artificial dermiscombined with seal negative pressure drainageisa newtechniquefor treating refractorywounds. Theformation ofclosed negative pressurein theinfected area can eliminatethe dead space, resulting in thetimely removal ofexudateand necrotictissue, promoting the growth of granulation tissueand acceleratingwound healing. Instead oftherearapplication in thetreatment of neck multiplespaces infection, vacuumsealing drainage(VSD) is commonly used in burns, largeareas ofcutaneous defects, stress-induced injury, diabeticfoot ulcer,etc. [8–11] This paper retrospectively studied datafrom20 patients with deep neck multiplespaces infection in our hospitaland compared theefficacy ofVSDwith that oftraditionaltreatment for reducing the occurrence of postoperativecomplications dueto deep neck multiplespacesabscessand improving the postoperative comprehensive benefitsamong patients. All patients included in this study provided informed consentand agreed to the use oftheir medical history information. Theethicscommittee ofThe CentralHospital ofWuhan, TongjiMedicalCollege, HuazhongUniversity ofScienceand Technology for the data ofthe patientsapproved thestudy.
