Trends in the epidemiology of inflammatory bowel disease in Colombia by demographics and region using a nationally representative claims database and characterization of inflammatory bowel disease phenotype in a case series of Colombian patients

Inflammatory bowel disease(IBD)affects ～5 million people worldwide,comprising 0.3%ofthe population inNorthAmericaand European countries. [1–4] Since 1990, there has been asteady increase ofIBDin newly industrialized countries. [2] Apossibleexplanation for this riseis increased urbanization and exposureto a Western lifestylein developing countries. [4–6] Despitethis globalrise, theepidemiology ofIBDremains poorly described across LatinAmerica, including inColombia. Therearealso no studiesexploring IBDtrendsacross various regions within a country, which could highlight disparities in the prevalence ofIBDin thoseareas most rapidly exposed to a Western environment.
