After 2 yearsasatraineefighter pilotat the Air Force Academy, he began his medicaltraining inColorado followed by surgicalresidency in Minnesota, working under giants like Varco and Lillehei. Aftera PhDin biophysics, he did hiscardiacsurgery training at Harvard MedicalSchool and subsequently joined the Children's HospitalinBoston asafaculty under Castenada. Heleft his mark at Children's Hospital ofPhiladelphiaas thechief ofthe programfora decade.
