Aquatech pushes water technology as a service

Anew joint venture between Aquatech International and Upwell Water aims to deploy $500 million of capital over the next 3-4 years by offering outsourced solutions to customers at no upfront cost under a water technology-as-a-service model. "The conversation around water technology as a service is about getting to the lowest total cost of ownership, and as water scarcity increases and waters become more complex and difficult to treat, customers need more reliable plants, and hence there is more of a pull for clients to take a holistic view," Aquatech managing director Devesh Sharma told GWI this month. "We have been limited by an asset-light balance sheet strategy, and that's why we went out to find a partner in order to grow our outsourcing business to the next level. As a vertically integrated developer, we have the technology, we have the service, and by wrapping it financially, we can give the client a predictable price and an accountable partner for water operations." Upwell will provide the majority of the financing for each initiative undertaken by the AQUIOS joint venture. The scope of interventions is expected to range from equity injections into greenfield treatment plants through brownfield retrofits to the leasing and rental of Aquatech's mobile treatment solutions.
