In the process of interpreting sarcasm in written form, the contextual information is indispensable, and in the process of interpreting verbal sarcasm, context and prosody will work together. However, there are still lots of controversies about which cue plays bigger role in the perception process. We find that the main reason for the divergence among different studies is that they did not control the complexity of the contextual information. Future studies about verbal sarcasm perception should pay more attention to the irrelevant variable, so that the validity and reliability of the experiment can be improved.
