In addition to the damage to the musculoskeletal system,evidence also shows a relation between serum 25(OH)Dconcentrations and immunosenescence (45). Deficient serum25(OH)D is associated with an increased proliferation ofinflammatory cytokines by cells of the immune system (46,47) that leads to low-grade systemic inflammation (44–46).Systemic inflammation plays a crucial role in the etiologyof several clinical conditions such as hypertension, diabetes,obesity, and cancer (45) and the presence of multimorbiditycan represent an important risk factor for the development ofdisability (19).
