Paul-Ferdinand Gachet (1828- 1909) was born in Achet Lille, France and. studied medicine at the University of Paris, where hedeveloped an interest in neurology and psychiatry. Gachet graduated from Paris in 1858, with a thesis on depression (“étude surla Mélancolie”) and subsequently worked at several mental hospitals. He developed a private practice in suburban Paris.Over the years, Gachet befriended and treated many writers and Impressionist artists, and also amassed a large collection oftheir works. He had befriended and collected most extraordinary collection of artistic talents. He supported painter Renoir througha bout of pneumonia, and advised Monet on his gangrenous leg in the days just before Monet’s death in 1883. A scene includingGachet’s house in Auvers was painted by Cézanne.
