35 years of international bone density workshops: historical and scientific perspectives

Considerable progress has been made over the past 30e40 years in thedevelopment of quantitative imaging methods for assessing the skeletonnoninvasively and/or nondestructively, so that skeletal disorders, especiallyosteoporosis, can be detected early, progression and response to therapymonitored, and fracture risk determined. Clinicians and researchers can nowevaluate the peripheral, central, or entire skeleton as well as thetrabecular, cortical and endosteal envelopes with a high degree of accuracyand precision, and they can reliably estimate bone strength and thepropensity to fracture. The purposes of this presentation are to review thehistorical background and evolution of the series of International BoneDensity Workshops and their collective promotion, advancement and overallimpact on the development and application of the various methods forquantitative bone imaging in preclinical and clinical research.
