Comparing the Use of Mobile Intelligent Agents vs Client Server Approach in a Distributed Mobile Health Application

—It is well known, that any reasonable size application that constantly accesses a database, will inevitably have to contend with performance issues as the application grows. These issues are compounded when the application is serving millions of requests, by heterogeneous clients. To tackle these issues, the use of mobile intelligent agents, instead of the traditional client server approach was explored. This solution was assessed by evaluating the use of mobile intelligent agents in a distributed medical application by the name OptiPres. In this application, instead of executing multiple queries remotely, mobile intelligent agents were used to migrate to database servers and execute queries locally while performing local processing. The aim of this technique is to reduce the network load and thus increase the responsiveness and speed of distributed applications. The preliminary results show that using mobile intelligent agents to collaborate in performing local queries outperformed the traditional approach to access database servers.
