The global prison population has continued to rise,with almost 11 million people in prison despitedownward trends in crime.1 The Standard MinimumRules for the Treatment of Prisoners mandates theprotection of basic human rights for persons deprivedof liberty and advocates for the improvement of livingconditions and environments of people in prison.2Health disparity is evident with imprisoned people likelyto be the most marginalised and poorest members ofsociety, with health outcomes further compoundedwhen incarcerated.
