A joint statement was published by The Endo- crine Society, The American Thyroid Associa- tion, the Society of Nuclear Medicine, and the American Association of Clinical Endocrinolo- gists, in reaction to a recent news article that questioned whether the general public poten- tially faces excessive radiation exposure from patients who recently completed |-131 treat- ment for thyroid cancer. The societies believe the current procedure to be safe if proper instructions are followed, but would support reexamination of the issue should new data emerge to prove other- wise.
