Le carnaval dans le monde hispanique: sensualité et métissage chez Severo Sarduy et Juan Goytisolo

De donde son los contantes (1967) by the Cuban writer Severo Sarduy and Reivindicación del conde don Julián (1970) by the Spanish writer Juan Goytisolo, are two novels that reflect on Carnival as a rite capable of subverting the austere catholicism of the Spanish identities, by opposing it to Lent. Thus, they explore the idea of “Hispanidad” and the cultural fusion in its identities. This belongs to a general XXth century criticism of the concept of Hispanicity and empire, and to a political engagement against dictatorships.
