Detection of protein-losing enteropathy by 99m Tc-UBI scintigraphy

a positive result when the stomach is the place responsible forprotein loss [5]. An important advantage of functional imagingis the possibility to localize the site of the protein loss. Severalradiopharmaceuticals such as In-111-transferrin, Tc-99m human immunoglobulin, Tc-99m dextran, Tc-99m human serumalbumin (Tc-99m HSA), and Tc-99m methylene diphosphonate(Tc-99m MDP) have been used for this purpose [6–8]. Tc-99mUBI is an anti-microbial peptide which can be used for detectionof protein loss in the gastrointestinal tract. Our case showed diffuse protein loss in the small bowel and no localized area couldbe demonstrated, which is compatible with other cases of PLEfollowing Fontan operation. Our case showed the potential ofTc-99m UBI scintigraphy for detection of PLE. To the extent ofour knowledge, this is the first report in the medical literature inthis regard.
