Jaipur was founded in 1727 by SawaiJaiSingh II, theruler ofAmber, hencethe name derived. It holds the distinction of being thefirst plannedcity ofIndia, full of heritage with flavor ofmodernity. Noted architect“Vidyadhar Bhattacharya” used the“Vaastu Shastra”to build thecitywithuniquestreet grid pattern. Well known all over the world as“Pink City,”it was in 1876 that Maharaja RamSingh painted theentirecity pinkduring the visit ofPrince ofWalesas pink color was symbolic of hospitality. Pink is stillthetrademark building color in the walled city and colorfulgemstonesarethe major trade. Thecity has recently becomea UNESCO world heritagesiteand is only thesecond Indian city to feature on theprestigious list.
