Peripheral retinal vasculitis in chickenpox: A case report

A22-year-old female presented to ourclinic with blurring of vision and mild pain in thelefteyefor 2 days. She developed cutaneous papulovesiculareruptions over her forehead [Figure 1]afor thelast 5 days. Sheconsulted a dermatologist who confirmed aclinical diagnosis of chickenpox and started her on oralacyclovir 800 mg 5 times daily. Slit-lamp examination ofthelefteyeshowed diffuse keratic precipitates,cells 1 ,and flare 1 in theanteriorchamber with aclear lensand a quiteanterior vitreous. Dilated fundusexamination of both eyes was unremarkable at that time. At 1-week follow-up with topicalsteroid and cycloplegics, fundusexamination ofthelefteyerevealed mild vitritis,a normal discand active vasculitis ofretinal vessels in theextreme periphery, [Figure 1]b whichwasconfirmed by fluorescein angiography (FA) ofthelefteye[Figure 1]c. After 6 weeks, thefundusexamination showed resolving retinal vasculitis with no evidence ofany retinallesion. At the 3-month visit, there was completeresolution of vasculitis, whichwasagain confirmed with the help ofarepeat FA,and antiviraltreatment was stopped. Sheis under follow-up with us for thelast 1 yearand we did not observeany intraocular inflammation till date.
