A data processing system has a host computer (6) and a peripheral (4) contg. a data buffer (8) for storing information to be transmitted or received over a bus (2). A wait loop routine unit (10) contains a list of instructions to control the read and write operations. When error functions are identified, the internal operations of the peripheral unit is interrupted. Data is saved into the buffer memory and the process recommences when the host computer generates the necessary signal. ADVANTAGE - Protects data within buffer when fault in peripheral occurs.
