Reminiscences of a SAICE reviewer

After retiring from the Department ofWater A?airs at the end of 1994, I waso?ered the position of secretary of thethen Civil Engineering Advisory Council(CEAC), a council established to advisegovernment, through the Minister ofTransport, on matters a?ecting the civilengineering industry. I served in thiscapacity until CEAC was superseded bythe Construction Industry DevelopmentBoard. During my period as secretary ofCEAC, I met with many role-players inthe civil engineering industry, includingDawie Botha, at the time ExecutiveDirector of the South African Institutionof Civil Engineering (SAICE). SAICEinvited me to become a reviewer, and Iserved in this capacity from October 1999until the end of 2016 – a stretch of timethat turned out to be a most rewardingperiod in my life
