DSB urges DOD to harness advanced modeling tools for acquisition

The Defense Science Board says the Pentagon could gain "revolutionary" benefits from upgrading and increasing its use of capabilities like digital engineering, virtual exercising, strategic gaming and synthetic environments.In a January report released this week, the DSB's Task Force on Gaming, Exercising, Modeling, and Simulation (GEMS) recommends the Defense Department make better use of the "game-changing set of tools and enablers" to improve decision-making against the backdrop of an increasingly complicated security environment.The task force was chaired by Ruth David, formerly of Sandia National Laboratories and the CIA, and Bill LaPlante, former Air Force acquisition chief and current president at Draper Laboratory."If the DOD moves to improve its GEMS capabilities and incorporate GEMS tools in a coordinated manner, the benefits to the department will be revolutionary. In the contemporary security environment, the DOD must not fail to take advantage of this game-changing set of tools and enablers," David and LaPlante wrote in a memo preceding the report.
