Eastern European cities currently under-served by wastewater treatment infrastructure are scrambling to issue construction tenders for projects funded by development bank money, as they seek to comply with the EU Urban Waste Water Treatment Directive. North Macedonia (recently renamed after a three-decade dispute with Greece) heads the pack, with two plants set to go to tender as GWI went to press. The larger of these, a new 130,000m~3/d plant for the capital Skopje, is being funded jointly by the EBRD and the EIB, while Tetovo - one of the country's mid-size cities - expects to issue an RFQ later this month for a €30 million WWTP funded through the EU's fund for candidate members.
