Pentagon advisory panel calls for DOD to establish counter-autonomy czar

An influential Pentagon advisory board says the U.S. military is laying the groundwork for autonomous weapons systems, but not sufficiently preparing to deal with such technologies in the hands of adversaries. The board is recommending the Defense Department adopt a comprehensive counter-autonomy strategy -- including counter counter-autonomy plans -- beginning with establishing a new senior official to oversee such efforts. The Defense Science Board, in a task force report dated September 2020 and made public today, outlines a roadmap for Pentagon leaders to establish a comprehensive U.S. military counter-autonomy project, including formulating policies, capabilities and talent for an area experts believe will play an important role in future warfare.
