Theupperrhombiclip,aprominentgerminalzoneofthecerebellum,wasrecentlydemonstratedtogeneratedifferentneuronalcelltypesovertimefromspatialsubdomains.WehavecharacterizedthedifferentiationoftheupperrhombiclipderivedgranulecellpopulationinstableGFP-transgeniczebrafishinthecontextofzebrafishcerebellarmorphogenesis.Time-lapseanalysisfollowedbyindividualgranulecelltracingdemonstratesthatthezebrafishupperrhombiclipisspatiallypatternedalongitsmediolateralaxisproducingdifferentgranulecellpopulationssimultaneously.Time-lapserecordingsofparallelfiberprojectionsandretrogradelabelingrevealthatspatialpatterningwithintherhombiclipcorrespondstogranulecellsoftwodifferentfunctionalcompartmentsofthematurecerebellum:theeminentiagranularisandthecorpuscerebelli.Thesecerebellarcompartmentsinteleostscorrespondtothemammalianvestibulocerebellarandnon-vestibulocerebellarsystemservingbalanceandlocomotioncontrol,respectively.Giventhehighconservationofcerebellardevelopmentinvertebrates,spatialpartitioningofthemammaliangranulecellpopulationandtheircorrespondingearlier-produceddeepnucleibypatterningwithintherhombiclipmayalsodelineatedistinctfunctionalcompartmentsofthecerebellum.Thus,ourfindingsofferanexplanationforhowspecificfunctionalcerebellarcircuitriesarelaiddownbyspatio-temporalpatterningofcerebellargerminalzonesduringearlybraindevelopment./p/div
