Drosophilamelanogasterlarvaeandadultsrespondtoawiderangeofchemosensorystimuli.Wedescribethegeneticsanddevelopmentalexpressionoftheeastgene,mutationswhichresultinadult-specificchemosensorydefects.Theoriginalisolateofeastissemidominantforthebehavioralphenotype.Severalmutationshavebeengenerated,someofwhicharerecessivelethalsandothersthatareviableallelesthatshowarecessive,adult-specific,chemosensorydefect.Nolarvalchemosensorydefectswereobserved.Theeastgeneisexpressedintheneurogenicregionatthetimeofneuroblastsegregationandincellsintheperipheralandcentralnervoussystem.Ourresultssuggestthateast+expressioninthenervoussystemisrequiredforanormaladultchemosensoryresponseandbothincreasesanddecreasesinlevelsofthegeneproductresultinamutantphenotype.
