Embryonicdevelopmentofepithelialorganprimordiaofteninvolveschangesinseveralparameters,suchascellheight,cellwidth,cellvolume,amountofextracellularspace,andcellnumber.Sincethesechangesoftenoccursimultaneously,itbecomesdifficulttoa€?separateouta€?therolethateachplaysinthedevelopmentalprocess.Acomputerprogramhasbeenwrittenthatallowstheshapeofepithelialorganstobereproducedbaseduponmeasurementsoftheprimordium.Adevelopmentalsequencecanbesimulatedbychangingthedimensionsoftheprimordiumbaseduponeithermeasurementsofthedevelopmentalstagesortheoreticalprojectionsofchanges.Theprimordiumisdividedintoblocksrepresentinggroupsofcells,baseduponcharacteristicsofthedifferentcellgroups.Theprogramallowsdifferencesincellheightandcircularandspiralcurvaturesoftheprimordiumtobesimulated.Analysisoftheopticprimordiumusingthismethodhasallowedrecognitionofseveralregionalchangesduringopticcupformation.Thesearesequentialconstrictionofcellapicesatthemarginoftheopticcup,expansionoftheapicalsurfacetowardthecenteroftheretinaldisc,andspreadingofthefuturepigmentedlayer.Simulationofotherorganspermitsregionsofmorphogeneticactivitytobeidentified.
