Themainhemoglobin(Hb)foundinShumway(embryonic)stage25bullfrogsisthatwhichwehavedesignatedTd-4.TheothermajortadpoleHbs(Td-1,2,and3)predominateduringTaylorandKollros(larval)stagesIa€“XVIII.WeproposethatTd-4isanembryonicHb,whereasTd-1,2,and3arelarval(fetal-like)Hbs.EmbryonicHbTd-4continuestobesynthesizedduringthelarvalstages.Duringthelarvalperiod,theaverageperipheralbloodHbprofilechangesverylittlewithmorphologicalstageorgeneralgrowth.However,thereisgreatheterogeneityintheembryonic:larvalHbratioamongindividualtadpolesofagivenstageorweight,apparentlyduetodifferentialHbandredcellproductionbythetwoactiveerythropoieticsites,mesonephrickidneys(Td-4),andliver(Td-1,2,3).
