Wepreviouslyreportedthatfetalmouseovariesfrequentlydeveloptesticularstructuresfollowingtransplantationintoadultmalemice.Themechanisminvolvedingonadalsexreversalofovariangraftsisnotknown.Inthepresentstudy,weexaminedtheinfluenceoftheadjacentmesonephrosondevelopmentoftheovariangrafts.Theresultsshowthat(1)whenfetalovariesweretransplantedwiththeattachedmesonephros,thefrequencyofovotestisdevelopmentwashigherinmalehoststhaninfemalehosts,(2)thefetalovariesthathadbeenseparatedfromthemesonephrosdevelopedtesticularstructuresmorefrequentlythanthosewiththemesonephros,andtheincidenceofovotestisdevelopmentwascomparableinmaleandfemalhosts,(3)removalofthecranialorcaudalhalfofthemesonephrosresultedinasimilarfrequencyofovotestisdevelopment,and(4)whenfetalovarieswereseparatedandreattachedtothemesonephros,theydevelopedtesticularstructuresatafrequencysimilartothatofovariesleftattachedtothemesonephros,andthesexofmesonephroireattachedtoovariangraftsdidnotinfluencetheincidenceofovotestisdevelopment.Thesefindingssuggestthatfetalovariescandeveloptesticularstructuresaftertransplantationregardlessofthesexofhost,andthattheadjacentmesonephrosprotectsovariangraftsfrommasculinizingstimulimoreefficientlyinfemalehoststhanmalehosts.
