γ‐AminobutyricacidtypeA(GABAA)receptorβ1(gabrb1),asubunitofGABAAreceptorsinvolvedininhibitoryeffectsonneurotransmission,wasfoundtoassociatewiththeformationofprotease‐resistantprionproteininprion‐infectedneuroblastomacells.Silencingofgabrb1geneexpressionsignificantlydecreasedtheabnormalprionproteinlevelbutparadoxicallyincreasedthenormalprionproteinlevel.Treatmentwithagabrb1‐specificinhibitor,salicylidenesalicylhydrazide,dose‐dependentlydecreasedtheabnormalprionproteinlevel,butsilencingofotherGABAAreceptorsubunits’geneexpressionandtreatmentswiththereceptorantagonistsandagonistsdidnot.Therefore,gabrb1involvementinabnormalprionproteinformationisindependentofGABAAreceptors...
