Recentstudieshavelinkedhumangutmicrobestoobesityandinflammatoryboweldisease,butconsistentsignalshavebeendifficulttoidentify.HerewetestforindicatortaxaandgeneralfeaturesofthemicrobiotathataregenerallyconsistentacrossstudiesofobesityandofIBD,focusingonstudiesinvolvinghigh‐throughputsequencingofthe16SrRNAgene(whichwecouldprocessusingacommoncomputationalpipeline).WefindthatIBDhasaconsistentsignatureacrossstudiesandallowshighclassificationaccuracyofIBDfromnon‐IBDsubjects,butthatalthoughsubjectscanbeclassifiedasleanorobesewithineachindividualstudywithstatisticallysignificantaccuracy,consistentwiththeabilityofthemicrobiotatoexperimentallytransferthisphenotype,signaturesofobesityarenotconsistentbetweenstudiesevenwhenthedataareanalyzedwithconsistentmethods.Theresultssuggestthatcorrelationsbetweenmicrobesandclinicalconditionswithdifferenteffectsizes(e.g.thelargeeffectsizeofIBDversusthesmalleffectsizeofobesity)mayrequiredifferentcohortselectionandanalysisstrategies...
