Low‐intensitypulsedultrasound(LIPUS)isusedforbonehealinginorthopedicsanddentistry.IthasbeenshownthatLIPUSinducesthesecretionofextracellularadenosinetriphosphate(ATP),akeymediatorofosteoblastresponsetomechanicalstimuli.However,thedetailedmechanismofLIPUS‐inducedosteogenesishasbeenelusive.Inthisstudy,weinvestigatedtheroleoftheP2X7receptorinLIPUS‐inducedosteogenesis.LIPUSinducedthereleaseofextracellularATP,differentiationofosteoblastsandosteogenesisviatheP2X7receptor,withoutaffectingtheactivityofalkalinephosphatase(ALPase).TheseresultssuggestthatLIPUS‐inducedextracellularATPpromotesboneformationviatheosteoblastP2X7receptorindependentlyofALPase...
