Somatomedin and growth retardation in children with chronic renal insufficiency

A number of recent observations have brought into question a possible role for the somatomedins in explaining the growth failure which characterizes chronic renal disease in childhood [1–5]. In order to put these findings into perspective, it is necessary first to review the status of these peptides as mediators of growth and the wide variety of techniques which have been used to measure the levels of these substances in serum.
