Mycobacterium celatum Pulmonary Infection in the Immunocompetent: Case Report and Review

Mycobacterium celatum has been shown to cause diseasein immunocompromised patients. We report a case of seriouspulmonary infection caused by M. celatum in an apparentlyimmunocompetent patient and review the characteristics of twoother reported cases. Clinical and radiologic symptoms andsigns included cough, malaise, and weight loss associated withcavitary lesions and pulmonary infiltrates. Although M. celatumis easy to detect in clinical specimens by liquid and solid media,it may be misidentified as a member of the M. tuberculosis com-plex or as M. xenopi. M. celatum pulmonary infection appearsto respond to antimycobacterial chemotherapy, particularly withclarithromycin
