摘要

To the Editor: Each year ≈350,000Americans travel to Africa and≈500,000 travel to Brazil and the FarEast, all schistosomiasis-endemicregions. Data from the EuropeanNetwork on Imported InfectiousDiseases Surveillance (TropNetEurop)suggest that most schistosomiasiscases imported to Europe are acquiredin Africa; 80% of new cases world-wide occur in sub-Saharan Africa(1,2). Travelers to Africa from theUnited States are also at high risk forinfection. Schistosoma mansoni hasthe greatest impact on residents of dis-ease-endemic areas who have high-grade infection and progressivehepatosplenic disease with portalhypertension and its manifestations. Most infected, short-term travelerssustain a low-level of fluke infestationwith few symptoms, although seriouscomplications can occur
