To the Editor: During the globalepidemic of severe acute respiratorysyndrome (SARS), the illness wastransmitted rapidly within hospitals,which created pools of persons whobecame infected and through whomthe disease was spread. Intrahospitaltransmission amplified regional out-breaks and augmented spread of theillness into the community (1–3).Healthcare workers, hospital patients,and hospital visitors accounted for18%–58% of all cases of SARS in thefive countries with the largest out-breaks (1,2).
