Retinal blood vessels diameters in unilateral ischemic central retinal vein occlusion using infrared imaging.

Purpose : To evaluate the retinal blood vessels diameter in patients with unilateral ischemic central retinal vein occlusion (CRVO). Methods : Consecutive 18 eyes from 9 patients with unilateral ischemic CRVO had their artery and vein diameter at 12 or 6 oa??clock measured horizontally using infrared imaging (Spectralis; Heidelberg Engeneering, Heidelberg, Germany software) and then compared with fellow eye at the same position. Results : The mean age was 56.90 years (range, 44-78) and 63.3% were women. The mean retinal vein diameter was 241(range, 114-300) ?μm and 133 (range, 94-153) ?μm in the study and control group, respectively, P=0.008. In relation to retinal artery diameter, the mean was 120 (range, 89-174) ?μm and 95.5 (range, 80-120) ?μm in the study and control group respectively, P=0.020. Conclusions : Our data suggest that in ischemic CRVO eyes there are an increase of the retinal veins and arteries diameter. Prospective study inhibiting VEGF could first elucidate the role of this citokyne in retinal vascular diameter and second, confirm our findings.
