Background: Outbreaks of cholera due to El Tor biotype of O1 serotype occur periodically in Iran which poses a public health problem. Among different molecular typing techniques, pulsed-field gel electrophoresis (PFGE) has proved to be highly discriminatory for the analysis of Vibrio Cholerae O1 and O139 genetic diversity. This method has been successfully used for monitoring dissemination and emergence of new epidemic clones of Vibrio Cholerae.
