Bioaerosol biodiversity is now used to describe human and animal exposure to airborne microorganisms. Mbareche et al. (e01589-18) employed a next-generation sequencing approach for biodiversity assessment using two liquid air samplers and an electrostatic filter sampler. Bacterial diversity of aerosols from four wastewater treatment plants and fungal diversity of aerosols from five dairy farms were determined. Significant differences between samplers were observed when comparing the numbers of OTUs retrieved. The dry electrostatic sampler was consistently the more efficient at collecting fungal and bacterial OTUs, and the majority of the diversity revealed by dry electrostatic sampling was not identified using the cyclonic liquid impactors. The findings of this work suggest that information about the ability of samplers to cover microbial diversity and their efficiency at doing so are pertinent to the choice of a bioaerosol sampler.
