Comparison of Spirometric Parameters in Obese with Normal Weight Middle School Female Students

BackgroundandObjective:Obesityisaseriousproblemthreateningpublichealth.Itisanimportantriskfactorformanypulmonarydiseases,andasignificantcauseofmortalityamongpeople.Therefore,itseemsthatobesityandthe%ofbodyfatareassociatedwithrespiratoryproblems.Thepresentstudywasundertakentoexaminespirometricparametersinobesefemalestudentsatmiddleschool,comparedtonormalweight.Thedatawereanalysedbyposthoctest(LSD).SubjectsandMethods:TwohundredandeightythreestudentsfrommiddleschoolstudentsinIsfahan(aged12.79±0.88,withbodymassindexof39/3±20Kg/m2)wereselectedinaclusterrandomwayandwerecategorized,basedonthepercentilebodymassindex(CUTOFF,BMI)andage,intothreegroupsofobese(n=50)withapercentileof95≥BMI,overweight(n=62)withapercentileof85≥BMI≤95andoptimalweight(n=171)withapercentileof15≥BMI≤85.SpirometricparametersweremeasuredusingspirometricmodelofJager.Results:Leastsignificantdifferenceposthoctestresultsalsoshowedthatlungfunctioninnormalstudentswasgreaterthanoverweightandobesestudents.Conclusion:Resultsshowedthatobesityparticularlyinfluencespulmonaryfunctionandsignificantlydecreasespulmonarycapacityandvolume.However,itsexactmechanismisnotwell-understoodandrequiresfurtherelaborativestudies.
