Evaluation of Typical Antipsychotic Augmentation with Sertraline in Reduction of Negative Symptoms in Patients with Schizophrenia in Ahvaz Golestan Hospital

BackgroundandObjective:Theaimofthisstudywastoevaluatetheefficacyofsertralineaddedtotypicalantipsychoticsforthetreatmentofnegativesymptomsofpatientswithschizophreniadisorder.SubjectsandMethods:Thisstudyisarandomizeddoubleblindclinicaltrial.Thirtypatientssufferingfromschizophreniadisorder(DSM-IV-TR)wereselectedrandomlyanddevidedintotwogroups.DepressionwasruledoutbyHamiltonDepressionQuestionnaire.Agroupwasgivensertraline(50mg/day)andtheothergroupreceivedplacebo.Theefficacyofsertralineandplaceboinreductionofsocialwithdrawal?emotionalwithdrawal?bluntedaffectandothernegativesymptomswasassessedweeklywithPANSSscaleduring6weeks.Results:Sertralinedidnotimprovesocialwithdrawal?emotionalwithdrawal?bluntedaffectandothernegativesymptomsinschizophreniapatientscomparedwithplacebo.Conclusion:Addingsertralineontypicalantipsychotictreatmentdoesnotseemtoimprovenegativesymptomsinpatientswithschizophreniadisorder.
