Successful Adoption of Software Process Improvement Models: A Cultural-Methodological Proposal

Adoption of a Software Process ImprovementModel (SPIM) is a problematic activity that occurs in almostall software development companies. This problem hasdifferent causes. One of these causes has relation withcultural aspects that are present in: a) The Company’sorganizational culture, b) The SPIM’s documents embeddedculture. Whether these cultural aspects are not treatedproperly there will be a problem that generates millions ineconomic losses to companies around the world.To reduce these economic losses and increase successfulrates of SPIM adoptions, we developed a culturalmethodologicalproposal. This has four steps: a) Identify theCompany’s organizational culture, b) identify the SPIM’sdocuments embedded culture and, c) Identify and quantifycultural aspects of organizational culture and embeddedculture and, d) explain differences between them. Thepurpose is to generate information that can be used todevelop plans and strategies for adoption andinstitutionalization of SPIM.Our proposal is illustrated using the Mexican Norm: NMXI-059/NYCE-2005 as an example of a SPIM and 8 MexicanSoftware development companies as an example oforganizational culture.
