A Novel PIM System and its Effective Storage Compression Scheme

The increasingly large amount of personalinformation poses a critical problem to users. Traditionalfile organization in hierarchical directories is not suited tothe effective management of personal information. In orderto overcome the shortcomings of the current hierarchicalfile system and efficiently organize and maintain personalinformation, some new tools are expected to be invented. Inthis paper, we propose a novel scheme called concept space -a network of concepts and their associations – and use topicmap as the underlying data model. We present amaterialized view scheme to provide users with a flexibleview of the file system according to their own cognition. Wealso reduce the storage requirement to save space usage ofthis system by borrowing some ideas from XML datamanagement and contriving a novel and efficient datacompression scheme. To demonstrate the effectiveness of theabove idea, we have implemented a prototype personalinformation management system called NovaPIM andpresented its system architecture. Extensive experimentsshow that our proposed scheme is both efficient andeffective.
