Measuring the level of public understanding of total solar eclipse from the mass media: Palembang as sample

TheTotalSolarEclipse(TSE)onthe9thMarch2016receivedahugeattentionfromthemassmedia.SomeofthemintensivelywritearticlesaboutitevenmonthsbeforetheTSEday.Asweknowmediaplaysstrategicrolenotonlyinraisingpublicawarenessbutalsointerest.Theaimofthisprojectistostudytherelationbetweenthenumberofaccessestothemediainformationandhowwellpubliclearnedtheinformationdeliveredbythemedia.Wepreparedquestionnaireconsistingofsevensemi-multiplechoicesonhowpublicgotinformationaboutTSE.WegavethemchoicesofwhattheyhadheardtomeasuretheirbasicunderstandingofTSE.Furthermoreweaddtwo"wrong"choicesinthelastquestionstoidentifylessseriousrespondents.Weanalyze60respondentsofPalembangwhovisitedAmperabridgearea.OurresultshowsnocorrelationbetweenthenumberofinformationaccessandthelevelofunderstandingaboutTSE.WealsofoundthatlocalmediadidnotprovidethescientificcontentofTSEaswellasthenationalmedia...
