Physical, chemical and biological characteristics of space flown tomato (Lycopersicum esculentum) seeds

Severalresearchshowedthatspaceflowntreatedseedshadadifferentcharacteristicwiththatofgroundtreatedseed,whicheventuallyproducedadifferentcharacteristicofgrowthandproductivity.Researchwasconductedtostudythephysical,chemicalandbiologicalproperties,suchastherateofgerminationandthegrowthoftomato(Lycopersicumesculentum)spaceflownseedscomparedwiththatofcontrolone.ObservationsofphysicalpropertiesusingaSEMshowedthattherewereporesonthesurfaceofsometomatospaceflownseeds.Observationsusingastereoandinvertedmicroscopeshowedthatthecoatlayerofspaceflownseedswasthinnerthancontrolseeds.Thetotalmineralcontentinthecontrolseeds(22.88%)wasaveragelyhigherthanspaceflownseeds(18.66%),buttheaveragecarbohydratecontentincontrolseedwaslower(15.2±2.79%)thanthespaceflownseeds(9.02±1.87%).Thelevelofauxin(IAA)ofcontrolseeds(142±6.88ppm)wasaveragelylowerthanthespaceflownseeds(414±78.84ppm),whereasthelevelofcytokinins(zeatin)forthecontrolseeds(381±68.86ppm)washigherthanthespaceflownseeds(68±9.53ppm),andthelevelofgibberellin(GA3)forthecontrolseeds(335±10.7ppm)washigherthanthespaceflownseeds(184±7.4ppm).Theresultsofthisstudyshowedthatthephysicalandchemicalpropertiesoftomatospaceflownseedsweregenerallydifferentcomparewiththattocontrolseeds,sothatitmightalsoberesultedindifferentgerminationandgrowthcharacteristic.Thegerminationtestshowedthatspaceflownseedshadlowergerminationratecomparetocontrol.Thegrowthpatternindicatedthatplantedspaceflownseedsgenerallygrewbetterthancontrol.However,thosedataweremorehomogenousincontrolseedscomparetothatinspaceflowntomatoseeds...
