TheFifthInternationalWorkshop&SummerSchoolonPlasmaPhysics(IWSSPP'12)wasorganizedbySt.KlimentOhridskyUniversityofSofia,withco-organizersTCPAFoundation,AssociationEURATOM/IRNRE,andtheBulgarianAcademyofSciences.ItwasheldinKiten,Bulgaria,ontheBlackSeacoast,fromJune25-30,2012.ThescientificprogrammecoversthetopicsFusionPlasmaandMaterials;PlasmaModelingandFundamentals;PlasmaSources,DiagnosticsandTechnology.The4theditionoftheWorkshopPlasmasforEnvironmentalIssueswasco-organizedtogetherwiththeInstituteofPlasmasandNuclearFusion,Lisbon,Portugal.AspecialWorkshoponRemoteGOLEMoperationwasorganizedbytheInstituteofPlasmaPhysics,Prague,CzechRepublicforthestudentsandinterestedparticipantstoworkremotelywiththeCzechTOKAMAKGOLEM.Asinthepreviousissuesofthisscientificmeetingitsaimwastostimulatethedevelopmentofandsupportanewgenerationofyoungscientiststofurtheradvanceplasmaphysicsfundamentalsandapplications,aswellasensuringaninterdisciplinaryexchangeofviewsandinitiatepossiblecollaborationsbybringingtogetherscientistsfromvariousbranchesofplasmaphysics.ThisvolumeofJournalofPhysics:ConferenceSeriesincludes12papers(invitedlectures,contributedtalksandposters)devotedtovariousbranchesofplasmaphysics,amongthemfusionplasmaandmaterials,dcandmicrowavedischargemodelling,transportphenomenaingasdischargeplasmas,plasmadiagnostics,materialprocessing,plasma-chemistryandtechnology.Someofthemhavebeenpresentedbyinternationallyknownandrecognizedspecialistsintheirfields;othersareMScorPhDstudents'firststepsinscience.Inbothcases,webelievetheywillraisereaders'interest.WewouldliketothankthemembersofboththeInternationalAdvisoryCommitteeandtheLocalOrganizingCommittee,theparticipantswhosenttheirmanuscriptsandpassedthroughthe(sometimesheavyandtroublesome)refereeingandeditingprocedureandourrefereesfortheirpatienceandconsiderableefforttoimprovethemanuscripts.Wewouldliketoexpressourgratitudetotheinvitedlecturerswhowerewillingtopaytheparticipationfee.Inthisway,inadditiontotheintellectualsupporttheyprovidedbymeansoftheirexcellentlectures,theyalsosupportedtheschoolfinancially.WearegratefultoFuseNet(http://www.fusenet.eu/)forsupportingEuropeanmasters'andPhDstudents'participationinthisevent,andtotheFundforScientificResearchattheUniversityofSofia,GrantNo145/2012...
