The prevalence of denture stomatitis is high in denture wearers. The objective of this study was to measure the effect of the surface roughness of denture base materials on the amount of Streptococcus mutans present. The surface roughness was measured using a surface roughness tester. The specimens were dipped into an Eppendorf tube containing Streptococcus mutans and incubated for 12 and 24 hours. A bivariate Pearson correlation test was performed on the data. There is a strong positive correlation between the surface roughness of the denture base material and the amount of Streptococcus mutans. A decrease in the value of the surface roughness after polishing a metal, acrylic resin, or valplast denture base is followed by a decrease in the amount of Streptococcus mutans.
