Health Policy Perspectives in Some African Countries

Health policy interventions may be analysed within specific ideological constructs which may include the Social Democratic, New Right, Marxist, Feminist, Welfare Pluralist and Anti Racist Perspectives. The discussion focuses on these ideological perspectives makes an analytical overview of how these have been applied in different health policy context in selected Sub Saharan African countries which include Botswana, Kenya, Tanzania, South Africa and Zimbabwe. The major findinds were that inteventions by the Kenyan government are ideogically influenced by Welfare Pluralism whilst experiencies in?Tanzania indicate a shift towards a combined state and regulated market provision of health care associated with the New Right Perspective. Findings on Botswana indicated effort towards gender mainstreaming in the health sector. In Zimbabwe, the government ha adopted the National AIDS Trust Fund to advance social democracy in the fights against HIV/AIDS. The Zimbabwean government is also pursuing Marxism with the aim of addressing health system imbalances and contemporary health needs. The South African government is going beyond the colour blind approach, associated with the Anti Racist Perspective through the adoption of the National Health Strategy, and planned National Health Insurance to deal with socio economic disparities in the health care system.
