The varied landscape-ecological composition of Slovenia had a significant impact in the past on the areal distribution of the population, activities, infrastructural network and landscape use. In the agrarian and industrial societies the landscape-ecological potentials of Slovenia were exploited in a variety of ways. Due to the excessive exploitation of natural resources and the burdening of sensitive landscape-ecological components in the postindustrial society, it has become urgent to use the landscape-ecological potential of Slovenia in such a way that protection and development be balanced. The sustainable model of spatial and regional development of Slovenia can only be implemented if its diverse landscape-ecological components are taken into account.
