Estrutura Social e Segrega??o em S?o Paulo: Transforma??es na Década de 2000

This article analyzes the transformations of residential segregation in the S?oPaulo metropolitan region in the 2000s. The paper departs from information onsocial classes generated from the EGP occupational classification in order totest current hypotheses concerning the recent transformations of classes andspaces. The data show that the metropolis continues intensely segregated andstructured around a clear avoidance pattern between the social groupspositioned at the extremes of social structure. However, although the changesof 2000s brought greater exclusivity for the areas inhabited by the elites, theyalso tended to increase heterogeneity in the rest of the city, contributing togreater social mix in intermediary spaces and at the peripheries.
