Unlocking Audio: Towards an Online Repository of Spoken Word Collections in Flanders

Currently,FlanderslagsbehindmanyotherEuropeanregionswithregardtodisclosingitsoralhistorycollections.DespiterecentattemptsundertakenbyculturalheritageinstitutionstomakeFlemishaudiocollectionsmoreaccessibleovertheInternet,thewidespreaddistributionofthesehistoricalsoundmaterialshasyettoberealized.Basedondiscussionswithstakeholders,theauthorsofthisarticlemapthecurrentsituationinFlandersregardingthepreservationanddisseminationofspokenwordcollections.Furthermore,wecriticallyassessthetechnologicaland,inparticular,theorganisationalfeasibilityofaninnovativedisclosureapplicationbymeansofaSWOT(Strengths,Weaknesses,OpportunitiesandThreats)analysis.Withourfindings,wehopetoinspireculturalheritageandarchiveinstitutionstodigitiseandopenuptheiraudio-visualcollections.Wehopeaswelltoprovidefoodforthoughtaboutpossibleopportunitiesandpitfallsforsimilararchivingprojects.
