Kepler - An OAI Data/Service Provider for the Individual

Thereareanumberofwaysaserviceprovidercanprovidearesourcediscoveryserviceacrossseveraldataproviders,thatis,severaldigitallibraries.Intheharvestingapproach,theserviceproviderharveststhemetadataofthedigitallibrariesandusesthemforunifiedresourcediscovery.Arecentstandardizationeffort,theOpenArchiveInitiative(OAI),definesastandard,openinterfacebetweendataprovidersandserviceproviderstoimplementdigitallibraryinteroperabilitybasedontheharvestingapproach.TheintentionofOAIistosupportdataproviders(archives)thatexistatanorganizationallevel.Atypicaldataproviderisadigitallibrarythathasnoconstraintsonhowitimplementsitsserviceswithitsownsetofpublishingtoolsandpolicies.However,tobepartofOAI,adataproviderneedstobe"open"inasfarasitneedstosupporttheOAImetadataharvestingprotocol.Inthispaper,weproposetheKeplerframework1basedonOAItosupportwhatwecall"personaldataproviders"or"archivelets".TheobjectiveoftheKeplerframeworkistosatisfytheneedforaverageresearchersatanaverageuniversitytopublishresultsanddisseminatethemquicklyandconvenientlytoawideaudience.Whilethisprimaryobjectiveistheresultofourpersonalexperience,webelievetheconceptcanbeextendedtoanycommunitythatwishesitspublicationstobemadeavailabletoawideaudienceovertheInternet.WehaveareferenceimplementationfortheKeplerframeworkthatwecalladigitallibraryofmany"little"publishers.Inparticular,wehaveimplemented(a)aneasy-to-usearchiveletthatisdownloadableandself-installing,(b)anautomatedregistrationservicetosupporttensofthousandsofpublishers,and(c)asimpleserviceprovidertoharvestmetadatafromarchivelets.
