Numerical and structural variations of the X chromosomes and no. 2 autosomes in mandarin vole, Microtus mandarinus (Rodentia)

Mandarin vole, Microtus mandarinus (Milne-Edwards, 1871), is a species of Microtus, Microtinae, Cricetidae. The small rodent has five subspecies, one distributed in Russia and Mongolia, one in Korea and another one in China. There are three subspecies in China. M. m. mandarinus (Microtus mandarinus mandarinus Milne-Edwards, 1871) is spread in the middle and south of Inner-Mongolia, south of Shanxi province and some areas around Lingbao county of Henan province; M. m. faeceus (Microtus mandarinus faeceus G. Allen, 1924) is spread in the middle of Shandong province, north of Yangzi river in Jiangsu province and some areas around Poxian county in north of Anhui province; M. m. Johannes (Microtus mandarinus Johannes Thomas, 1909) is spread in northwest of Shanxi province (Luo et al. 2000). Many cytogenetics and molecular genetics research papers has studied M. m. mandarinus captured in the suburbs of Lingbao in Henan province (Zhu et al. 1993, 1998, 2003a2003bZhu et al. 2004a2004b;Qu et al. 2000; Zhang and Zhu 2000).In this article, we analyzed karyotype of M. m. faeceus, compared karyotypes among different subspecies of Microtus mandarinus, and discussed karyotype evolution of the species.
