Peritoneal dialysis-associated peritonitis caused by vancomycin-resistant Enterococcus: Comprehensive review on treatment options

Vancomycin-resistant enterococci have emerged as a global health care threat and their occurrence in peritoneal dialysis-related peritonitis is a challenging condition for nephrologists because the treatment options are limited. In this review, we will discuss the established efficacy of linezolid, quinupristin/dalfopristin (Q/P), daptomycin, and the potential use of tigecycline in treating this condition. Because experience in treating this condition is extremely limited and there is a lack of well-constructed clinical trials on different treatment options, case reports/series were adopted for descriptive analysis. The treatment strategy in olden days involved using Q/P (switching to linezolid in case of treatment failures), whereas recent case reports have described successful use of daptomycin with preservation of the dialysis catheter in all cases.
